For those of you who are even remotely interested in world cup downhill skiing, no doubt you would have heard of Schladming. Ski holidays here have been an institution for well over 60 years Situated in the province of Styria, this large ski area links four mountains that will open up access to 174 kms of pisted slopes.
It is biased slightly towards the intermediate skiers with over 18 different red runs to keep then occupied. The novice has 6 different runs to choose from and the expert has1. On top of this, the resort has over 300 kms of very impressive cross country trails. The season here is a long one, opening on the 23rd October and holding through till the 1st May and Schladming has invested heavily in snow cannons, in the unlikely event that the snow is not forthcoming. Schladming has 25 lifts which can transport nearly 64,000 people every single hour to their chosen slope.
About the village:
There is a wide choice of accommodation in Schladming, ranging from self catering apartments through to lodges and don't think that this resort is short of a hotel! Schladming has over 35 to choose from, ranging from cosy and comfortable 2 and 3 star venues right up to luxurious 4 and 5 star establishments.
The apres ski scene is not as rowdy as some other destinations and it maintains a pleasant feel. The pedestrianised square is more of a place to relax and take in the scenery as you tuck into a delicious cake. There are however bars which stay open late and tend to attract a slightly younger crowd, bars such as Biesl, The Hanglbar and Siglu are prime examples. There are also two nightclubs which can get fairly lively.
If you are looking to shop, Schladming doesn't disappoint. It has a good selection of ski and sport shops, as well as high fashion and a really nice book store. Between 18th December and the end of the Christmas festivities, Schladming is lit by hundreds of candles and they offer a free horse drawn sleigh ride from shop to shop.
